beauty is simplicity

I got my butt out of bed and headed out my door down to the beach. It is such a joy to walk on the beach feeling the sand between my toes and laugh as the ocean spills its wave half way up my leg. I am sure I must look crazy as I am laughing to myself, talking to the birds, smiling at the children. My walking laughing meditation practice, simplicity!

So many people lose sight of the beauty surrounding them or get so caught up in the mundane business of running their lives they stop seeing the beauty that is all around. I see people so intent on their workout they have no idea how blessed they are to be walking, to be breathing, to be surrounded by the beauty of the ocean. Others have ear buds in their ears. What music has more effect on the soul as the sound of the ocean? We miss so much, so much, when we leave the beauty of the present moment lost in thoughts of; would of, could of, should of…

In the bible it says in Mathew …27“And who of you by being worried can add a single hour to his life? 28“And why are you worried about clothing? Observe how the lilies of the field grow; they do not toil nor do they spin,29yet I say to you that not even Solomon in all his glory clothed himself like one of these.…

The beauty of truth is in its simplicity. We have made life something to conquer rather than live. We have made villains across the world over and we continually overlook the little guy in favor of power and greed. We forget so easily the wonder of our world and more importantly we forget that everything that is happening to us is a reflection of our own thoughts words and deeds. We have been given a great blessing to be alive and the ability to change everything about ourselves. We are alive, we are experiencing life, we are seeing things, doing things and walking on a planet that is serving us even as we continually treat it like our living room complete with maid service.

When each of us makes up our mind to let go of unrealistic goals for our body or mind and sit at the seat of our soul we will live the verses from Mathew fully present in the gift we are given. As we live in gratefulness of our lives and blessings we open space inside to receive even more. When we gracefully give of our blessings to those in need we are blessed again.

Living in simplicity, knowing our needs are met, and residing within our soul’s peaceful nature this will helps us understand that just ‘being’ will always ‘be’ enough. This is my yoga!

the grace of a human

IMG_0004I am very disheartened lately, every where I turn I am looking at humans who seem to have no grace left or the idea of grace was something never taught. What happened to the idea of a woman being a graceful and mysterious presence. Do we still think of ourselves as nothing unless stared at by someone for whatever reason?

I walk the streets of sunny CA and see every manner of human in every state of dress. Believe me there are some beautiful people on this planet. I just wished I didn’t have to see so much of them. I guess what I really wish is for all the women to really understanding how the men are looking at them. I watch guys mouths open openly staring, well hell I’m looking too, you can’t help it. But these men are not just looking they are LOOKING! Like the man I called out with his tongue out, “I can’t help it” he says and I have to say the chick barely had pants on.

As a spiritual woman and a yogi I want to take them aside and show them what we see and how we see them when they are walking ahead of us leaving nothing to the imagination of every man woman and child walking by. It’s not that it matters so much what you wear, wear what you want. This is certainly not a feminist debate for me, again you are free to wear what you want. I’m just tired of looking at butt cracks or camel toes where they don’t belong.

When do we as women acknowledge there is not a one of us wearing skin-tight clothes whose is not uncomfortable, no one is enjoying their pants riding up into the nether regions. Most women are mortified when they find they have on clothes that become sheer in the sun. I know some or not, believe me I know.

The worse for me is in yoga class. The very place where respect of the vessel we inhabit is taught. The place where we practice realizing this material world is an illusion. Yoga class where we chant to unite ourselves with our God, our inner Divinity. The men all have appropriate clothes on. The women are divided by how they feel about their bodies. The more skin showing both a sign of more confidence or less self-esteem. I dislike it all. And its all enforced by the yoga clothing companies that are making the clothes so tight and revealing.

Just think yogis use to wear loose baggy clothes to practice yoga in, it was more about the postures, the practice, connecting with God than how you looked. Women use to wear clothes to flatter their bodies not to show us how their flesh is wrapped by their body. It was about weaving a mystery around your self, leaving things to the imagination and if you were in a relationship your partner would love it if you wore clothes. Men have been able to do what they want and the worst it has gotten is the constant appearance of some man’s drawers because they don’t or can’t pull their pants up any more.

I am ready to see a beautiful woman walk by fully dressed, a man with his pants up and frankly fitting his ass. Most of all I want to see less of you. The picture you show us as you walk amongst us is telling us who you are and how you feel about yourself. So really look in the mirror before you head out the door. Try to have some grace about yourself, we can see you!!!!!!!

Walking under trees

filepicker-AXRWjWTF0ErRcHCehQgg_treesI am in LA while work is being done on my house in Duluth. It is an understatement to say it has been hot. The kind of heat that makes everything hard and getting outside is a far away dream a very hot far away dream. It’s funny after all those years growing up in Florida and dealing with the heat, I thought I liked the heat. Now as opposed to ass biting cold I do enjoy being hot rather than cold but being too hot is a miserable and dangerous situation if you can’t get away from it.

But, I like to walk and I love to be outside. Here where you would think it an easy thing to do can’t understand the nature of heat in the city. When we have heat in Duluth it is the kind of hot you may hate but it’s equally the kind of hot that doesn’t exist as soon as you move out of the direct sun and say move under a tree. Immediately there is a break from the insane heat and your body relaxes. It is one of my favorite things, that moment when the breeze moves the heat out of way, even if just for a second. Here the heat seems to chase you.

Yesterday again ass kicking hot I went to find a cafe to hide in and was going to see a movie, both good indoor activities. So I don’t know what possessed me but I changed my mind mid route to the movies and for some insane reason kept walking. I was just too early I guess and headed instead to a my favorite bookstore. It’s the only one I know like the ones in Paris, a book store for readers, books for the art of reading not just for entertainment. You know what I mean if you know what I mean. Anyway, it was not a smart move as it was already mid-day and busting ass hot.

Driven by the heat I instinctively became aware of every street along the way that had shade trees and would walk that direction. The rest of the way there and back I walked on street after street under the shade of the most magnificent trees . Some were so big as to bridge the road making an umbrella that stretched for blocks. Before I knew it I was there hot but not dead.

The walk back after the wonderful hours sent perusing the shelves was made all the less horrible as I remembered my trail of shaded streets. I quickly stopped in a cafe for an iced chai for the walk back as the heat outside the shop was overwhelming. I had to walk a few steps in the heat to cross the intersection and I hurried towards the shaded streets.

Outside I was surrounded by the noise of the traffic and as I turned the corner I was all alone on a quiet street surrounded by trees. It was like stepping into a fantasy world. I felt the wind and I become aware of the breeze making the leaves sing a tune and suddenly another gust and the air was alive with birds. For a moment it was as if I wasn’t in LA at all but a street I knew not where. But I was somewhere on the planet lost in a magical moment surrounded by trees.
